Peter Davis's Short Hand is back for a fourth LP. Horses in the Chest is a decidedly even set of tracks that feels like a return to roots for both artist and listener. Short Hand hones his considerable skill for quirky instrumentation and noodling with a quiet acumen here. The album sounds dusty, sometimes old-timey, sometimes clearly planted in modern indie America--some of the songs like spirituals, some like angular contemporary paintings, all of them somehow familiar.
